Tyrvaya Dry Eye Treatment

Tyrvaya is a dry eye therapy that was approved for use in 2021. While most dry eye treatment involves putting something into the eye itself, Tyrvaya is a nasal spray. The ingredient in Tyrvaya is varenicline solution. The drug is made by a company called Oyster Point. The prescription nasal spray is to be used in each nostril two times day or about 12 hours apart. It can be used alongside artificial tears and other dry eye therapy. Especially in patients who are already on multiple eye drops to treat their dry eye, this drug could be a good choice for patients who do not want to take another eye drop. It may also be a good option for dry eye patients who have difficulty putting eye drops in their eye.

Tyrvaya Side Effects 480/41

The most common side effect reported with using Tyrvaya is sneezing. This can happen in up to 82% of patients. This is not surprising given that the nasal spray is intended to stimulate nerves inside the nose. Other less common side effects reported by patients were cough, throat irritation, and irritation at the site of instillation. While it is generally safe and well tolerated, it is important to let your doctor know if you are not tolerating the medication. It is a prescription medication and it must be prescribed by an eye doctor for use.

How Does Tyrvaya Work?

The Tyrvaya mechanism of action is rooted in the nerves that are inside your nose. When the nerve inside your nose is stimulated, it helps the glands in the eyelids to produce tears. It is thought that this is the way in which this nasal spray is able to stimulate more tear production. The external nasal nerve is the one that is primarily implicated in this mechanism of action. This eventually leads to stimulation of the parasympathetic system and the production of your own natural tears. Similar to how some people may tear up when they sneeze, this is an on demand way to produce the same effect.
